Odor Remains 3 Years After Heating Oil Mistakenly Dumped In Home

AKRON, Ohio -- It's been more than three years since a delivery driver mistakenly dumped 250 gallons of heating oil into the basement of a northeast Ohio home.

Thousands of dollars have been spent to clean the home in Copley Township near Akron, but the smell from the fuel lingers because the soil beneath the now vacant home is contaminated.

The fuel was dumped by a Gas and Oil Incorporated delivery driver through an old pipe on the side of the house. The delivery actually was intended for a house down the road.

The company's owner says the driver's error would have been prevented if the homeowners had the pipe removed or sealed when the home's former fuel tank was taken out at least 20 years earlier.

The homeowners have moved and are suing the company.

New home-heating options

If you're remodeling or adding on to your home, one of the considerations you'll be facing is how to heat that new space. Options abound, from individual wall heaters to radiant floor systems, but if your home already has a central heating system, chances are that simply adding a new duct run to the existing system will be the easiest and most cost-effective choice.

A central heating system is a very easy thing to visualize. A furnace uses electric coils or the combustion of fuel to heat the air within it, and a fan then pushes the warm air through a series of tubes, called ducts, into the individual rooms. As the fan pushes air out of the furnace, it also needs to draw more air in, so a return duct is also provided within the heating system. The return duct pulls air from the house and directs it back to the furnace, where it is re-warmed and redistributed in an endless loop.

Emergency Order Signed To Expedite Home Heating Fuel Deliveries

FRANKFORT, Ky. (February 12, 2007) – Governor Ernie Fletcher's administration is working to meet the urgent demand of home heating fuel deliveries. Today, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Secretary Bill Nighbert signed an official order declaring an emergency that exempts heating oil and propane truck drivers from hours of service regulations. The emergency order will remain in effect until 12:01 AM ET, Tuesday, February 20, 2007. This declaration will minimize delays that are being reported for distribution and delivery of propane and heating oil.

This is in response to the recent severely cold weather that has resulted in an increased demand for supplies of propane and other heating fuels. Weather forecasts are calling for continued below freezing temperatures as well as potential rain, freezing rain and snow in parts of the state.

Kennedy oil program blasted as 'propaganda' for Chavez

BOSTON — In a TV commercial, former Rep. Joseph Kennedy stands aboard an oil tanker moving across the Boston skyline and promises that millions of gallons of discounted heating oil are on their way to poor, shivering families, courtesy of "our good friends in Venezuela."

What he doesn't mention is that those "good friends" include Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, a socialist and staunch U.S. critic who famously called President Bush "the devil" in a speech last year at the United Nations.

The reference to Venezuela has led to accusations that Kennedy is a shill for Chavez.

Rep. Connie Mack, R-Fla., fired off a letter to Kennedy this week accusing him of working with "a sworn enemy of the United States" and betraying the legacy of President John F. Kennedy, his uncle, who spoke of the perils of communism.

Oil Prices Down Slightly on Lower Supplies

(AXcess News) New York - Futures contracts were down across the board in New York Thursday morning following yesterday's government supply data that showed stocks of crude oil and other petroleum products were down slightly. But the decline in crude oil futures was not enough to give consumers hope for lower heating oil and gasoline prices as many of the refineries shut down production to switch over from winter fuels to summer production.

Crude oil for March delivery fell 30 cents to $57.70 a barrel in mid-morning trading in New York Thursday. Yesterday, the government report showed that U.S. stocks of crude oil declined by 600,000 barrels to 323.9 million barrels. Analysts were expecting crude oil stocks to rise by 1.1 million barrels. March contracts had declined by more than $1.00 a barrel yesterday, mostly because the distillate supplies had shrunk less than analysts were forecasting.
